There are about 200 species of woody plants, trees and shrubs in the poppy family. They are found in the Northern Hemisphere, usually in temperate areas. They are common in the Mediterranean region. Plants in this family have cup-shaped flowers with male and female parts. Plants include the California poppy, the Oriental poppy, celandine, bloodroot and the bush poppy.
