Students will:
Have students brainstorm different places animals live. After they come up with a variety of habitats, have students list the things in those habitats that would help an organism survive.
In this experiment, students will explore buoyancy. Loons, with their solid bones, are denser than water, yet, like boats they float. Loons (and boats) float because of displacement. The loon’s body pushes water out of the way. The water pushes back and tries to fill in the space the loon is taking up. If the water displaced weighs the same or more than the object, the object will float! If the object weighs more than the water displaced, it will sink.
This is Archimedes’ Principle, which states that upward buoyant force on a submerged body is equal to the mass of the displaced liquid.
