There is only one bird species in the Hypocoliidae family. The Gray Hypocolius (Hypocolius ampelinus) is found in the Middle East, the Arabian Peninsula, and parts of southern Asia.

It breeds in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and Turkmenistan and winters mainly in the Arabian Peninsula, along the coasts of the Red Sea and Persian Gulf, and in parts of southern Pakistan and western India. It lives in dry and semiarid areas with trees, shrubs, and other vegetation.

The Gray Hypocolius is about the size of a cardinal. It has a slender body, long tail, and short bill. Females are mostly gray. Males are gray with a black mask around the eyes, black wings, and a black-tipped tail.

The Gray Hypocolius feeds mainly on fruits and berries, including dates and figs, but it also eats insects.

The Gray Hypocolius was once placed in the Bombycillidae family.
