Crocodilians are a group of amazing reptiles that includes 26 living species—crocodiles, alligators, caimans, and gharials. They’re famous for their tough, armored bodies, long tails, and jaws packed with sharp teeth!
Most live in rivers, lakes, and swamps, and some can even handle brackish or salty water. They’re cold-blooded, which means they depend on the sun and water to warm up or cool down.
These reptiles are incredible swimmers, using their strong tails to zoom through the water. Their eyes and nostrils sit on top of their heads so they can see and breathe while mostly hidden underwater.
Crocodilians are also surprisingly smart. They hunt together, take care of their babies, and some even use sticks to trick birds into coming closer.
They also have a four-chambered heart, more similar to birds and mammals than to other reptiles, which allows for efficient circulation.
Called “living fossils,” crocodilians have barely changed in millions of years, making them one of the oldest and coolest reptile groups alive today.
