Nesophontidae - West Indies Shrews

There were at least 6 and possibly as many as 12 species of large shrew-like mammals in this family. They are all extinct. They were found in Cuba, Haiti, Puerto Rico, the Cayman Islands, and the Dominican Republic.

Scientists believe the arrival of rats with Spanish explorers in the 1500s may have led to their eventual extinction.

Everything we know about these shrews has been learned from fossils.
