This family of birds includes around 150 species. They are found on every continent, except Antarctica.
They are small to medium in size and live in wetlands, usually in thick vegetation near lakes, marshes, swamps, or rivers.
They have long toes that help them move around on mud and vegetation.
They have short, rounded wings and plump bodies with short tails.
Males and females are usually alike.
