Casuariiformes - Cassowaries, Emus

There are four species in this order, all found in a single family. Cassowaries are found in rainforests in Australia, New Guinea, and surrounding islands. Emus are found in Australia.  Emus prefer open areas, while cassowaries live in dense rainforests.

The birds in this order have strong legs, soft feathers, and cannot fly, but they are fast runners and can defend themselves well. Cassowaries also have a helmet-like structure on their heads called a casque.

They are omnivores, eating fruits, seeds, insects, and small animals. They also help spread plant seeds in their environments.
