There is one family in the Gaviiformes order, containing five species of loons. Loons are large, duck-like birds with long necks, webbed feet, and sharp, pointed bills. Most have striking black, white, and gray feathers during the breeding season.

Loons live in North America, northern Europe, and Asia. They are excellent divers that catch fish underwater. Unlike most birds, loons have solid, dense bones instead of hollow ones. This helps them dive more easily.

Loons breed on freshwater lakes but spend the winter along ocean coasts and large inland waters. Many loon pairs stay together for many years, and some may mate for life. Loons can live for 30 years or more.
