There are three species of birds in this family: the Asian Fairy-bluebird (Irena puella), the Palawan Fairy-bluebird (Irena tweeddalii),  and the Philippine Fairy-bluebird (Irena cyanogastra).

Fairy-Bluebirds are medium-sized birds, about 24–26 centimeters (9.4–10.2 inches) long. They have strong, deep bills. Males have glossy blue and black feathers, while females are generally duller in color.

The Asian Fairy-bluebird is found in tropical southern Asia, including parts of India, Southeast Asia, and the Greater Sundas. The Philippine Fairy-bluebird is found only in the Philippines. The Palawan Fairy-bluebird is also found in the Philippines.

Fairy-bluebirds live in rainforests and along forest edges. They spend much of their time in trees, often high in the canopy, searching for food. They feed mainly on fruit and are especially fond of figs. They also eat insects and other foods.
