The Rhynochetidae family has just one living species—the Kagu (Rhynochetos jubatus). It lives in the mountain and lowland forests of New Caledonia, an island in the South Pacific.
The Kagu is a gray bird with long legs, a short, square tail, a pointed bill, and a crest on its head. When threatened or displaying, it raises its crest and spreads its wings to appear larger.
The Kagu was once hunted for its feathers and has also been threatened by introduced predators such as dogs and cats. Today, it is an endangered species, and conservation efforts are helping to protect the remaining wild birds.
