Perciformes is the largest order of fish in the world, with over 10,000 species spread across more than 150 families. They make up about 36-40% of all bony fish.
These fish are often called “perch-like” because many resemble the common perch in shape. Perciformes live in almost every type of water environment, from freshwater rivers and lakes to the ocean.
Most perciform fish have spiny fins, which protect them from predators and help them swim efficiently. They usually have streamlined bodies, which reduces water resistance, allowing them to move quickly and smoothly through the water.
Perciformes include a wide variety of well-known fish, such as perch, bass, and cichlids. Their diets are just as varied: some eat smaller fish, others eat insects, plankton, or even plants, depending on their species and habitat.
