Most of the species in this family are herbivores and eat leaves, stems, roots, seeds, and other plant parts. Many species also eat insects, small fish, mollusks, and crustaceans.
The birds in this family have webbed feet and broad bills. Chicks are precocial – that means they can feed themselves and swim a few hours after birth.
